As we study Egyptian and Mesopotamian Art, we see art which deals with Gods, and the belief in an afterlife.
We will be researching art that expresses a belief system concerned with an afterlife.
I want each student to research a religion :
Example: Buddhism
1. Write a brief essay 350 words considering the major tenets of the belief system.
2. Find two artworks that express that belief system :
Example :
Portrait of a Lama

This sculpture is a portrait of Chos-kyi-rGal-mTshan, the Tibetan Panchen Lama who lived from 1570 to 1662 and was the teacher of the Fifth Dalai Lama.
Great Stupa at Sanchi
http://sanchi.org/sanchi-great-stupa.html
The Great Stupa in Sanchi, India was originally built by the ruler Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. The center of this stupa boasted of a plain hemispherical brick like structure. This structure was laid to over the remains of the Buddha.
Sanchi Great Stupa also features an attractive and magnificent chhatra.
This chhatra has a parasol-like structure. It symbolizes high rank. It is believed that this Chhatra was constructed to honor and shelter the remains.
Explain the particular importance of the artwork:
A. What is it made of, how big is the work, date, etc.?
B. What is the meaning behind the work?
You must choose a different religion than your own.
This will be different than the discussion, which represents your own beliefs.
