of these terms as they will be used throughout the text and class discussions.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><em>Aging<\/em> is the process of growing old, regardless of chronological age.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Senescence<\/em> is a term used to describe the group of deleterious effects that lead to a decrease in the efficient functioning of an organism with increasing age and to an increased probability of death.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Senility<\/em> refers to the physical and mental deterioration often associated with old age.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Elderly<\/em> describes a person who is 60 to 75 years of age, as defined by the World Health Organization.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Old<\/em> describes a person who is\u00a076 to\u00a090 years of age, as defined by the World Health Organization.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Very old<\/em> describes a person who is\u00a0over 90\u00a0years of age, as defined by the World Health Organization.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Gerontology<\/em> is the scientific study of the process of aging.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Geriatrics<\/em> refers to health care delivery for the elderly.\u00a0 It is the branch of medicine that treats the conditions and diseases associated with aging and old age.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Longevity<\/em> refers to the duration of life of an individual.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><em>Mean longevity<\/em> is the average longevity of a population.\u00a0 This often referred to as life expectancy.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Maximum longevity<\/em> is the age at death of the longest-lived member of the population.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><em>Demography<\/em> is the statistical study of human populations collectively, including geographic changes and trends in births, marriages, diseases,
