While <\/span><strong><span class=\"s1\">annotations will not be collected or graded<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s2\">, doing them properly will aid in your understanding of the material and help you develop material for the assignments (<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Textual Annotations, Weekly Journals, and Major Essays<\/strong>)<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><strong><span class=\"s2\">While Reading<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s3\">: <\/span><\/h2>\r\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Characters <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Setting (When and\/or Where) <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Vocabulary <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Important ideas or information <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Write in the margins:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\">Formulate opinions<\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\">Make connections: Can you see any connections between this reading and another we have\u00a0had?<\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\">Ask open-ended questions (How...? Why...?)<\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\">Write reflections \/ reactions \/ comments: Have a conversation with the text! Did you like\u00a0something? Not like something?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">I recommend using multiple colored highlighters for these elements. Characters: Green, Setting: Blue, Margin Notes: Yellow, etc.). And be as detailed as possible when making notes--You'd hate to go back to something later and not remember why you highlighted it! <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">After Reading<\/span><span class=\"s3\">: <\/span><\/h2>\r\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Summarize: Attempt to summarize the work in 2-3 sentences without looking at the material. I <\/span><span class=\"s2\">recommend limiting your summary to 2-3 sentences because any longer could risk turning into a \"play-<\/span><span class=\"s2\">by-play\" vs. an actual summary. <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Articulate the most important idea you feel the text is presenting. \"The author wants us to know ___.\" \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">or \"The moral of the story is ___.\"<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span class=\"s1\">Complete these points in the margins at the end of the text or on the back of the last page. <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">Final Thought: <\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span class=\"s2\">Annotating is as personal as reading, and there are MANY ways to annotate a work. This system is just a suggestion. For example, some people prefer to use colored highlighters, while others may <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\r\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">prefer to use symbols (underlining key words,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>etc.).
