Labeling Notes<\/h1>\r\nLabel Your Notes:\u00a0Summary<\/a>,\u00a0Paraphrase<\/a>, or\u00a0Quotation<\/a><\/strong>\r\n\r\n\"A\r\n\r\nWhen you are taking notes, you might jot down the general parameters of an experiment you read about, you might summarize an author\u2019s argument, or you might copy a section of text.\u00a0Three, four, or five weeks later, when you sit down to write, you probably won\u2019t remember which card contained the\u00a0quote<\/a><\/strong>, which contained the\u00a0paraphrase<\/a><\/strong>, and which contained the\u00a0summary<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in your own words.\r\n\r\nWhether you are reporting someone else\u2019s experimental process, idea, or comment, you must always clearly distinguish when your use of that other person\u2019s material is a\u00a0summary of a<\/strong>\u00a0main idea<\/strong>\u00a0(someone else\u2019s key idea, but in your own words), a\u00a0paraphrase<\/strong>\u00a0(someone else\u2019s supporting materials rewritten in your own words), or a\u00a0quotation<\/strong>\u00a0(someone else\u2019s exact words).\r\n\r\nYou can help protect yourself from errors by creating a system that labels the material. One easy system is to mark quotations with a clear\u00a0Q<\/strong>, paraphrases with a\u00a0P<\/strong>, and summaries with an\u00a0S<\/strong>.\u00a0With guidelines such as these, or with another clear system that you devise, you won\u2019t find yourself unintentionally using someone else\u2019s words by confusing a quote with your own summary.
