Its goal is to make recommendations about the components of a healthy and nutritionally adequate diet to help promote health and prevent chronic disease for current and future generations. Although many of its recommendations have remained relatively consistent over time, the <em>Dietary Guidelines<\/em> has evolved as scientific knowledge has grown. These advancements have provided a greater understanding of, and focus on, the importance of healthy eating patterns as a whole, and how foods and beverages act synergistically to affect health. Therefore, healthy eating patterns is a focus of the <em>2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines<\/em>.\r\n<h2 id=\"key-recommendations-components-of-healthy-eating-patterns\">Key Recommendations: Components of Healthy Eating Patterns<a id=\"anch_61\" class=\"anchorjs-link jumplink-none\" href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/2015\/guidelines\/chapter-1\/key-recommendations\/#key-recommendations-components-of-healthy-eating-patterns\"><\/a><\/h2>\r\nThe <em>Dietary Guidelines<\/em>\u2019 Key Recommendations for healthy eating patterns should be applied in their entirety, given the interconnected relationship that each dietary component can have with others.\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\r\n<div class=\"guidelines-block\">\r\n<h3>Key Recommendations<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<strong>Consume a healthy eating pattern that accounts for all foods and beverages within an appropriate calorie level.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<strong>A healthy eating pattern includes:<\/strong>\r\n<ul class=\"overview\">\r\n \t<li>A variety of vegetables from all of the subgroups\u2014dark green, red and orange, legumes (beans and peas), starchy, and other<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Fruits, especially whole fruits<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Grains, at least half of which are whole grains<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Fat-free or low-fat dairy, including milk, yogurt, cheese, and\/or fortified soy beverages<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), and nuts, seeds, and soy products<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Oils (such as olive and canola oil)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>A healthy eating pattern limits:<\/strong>\r\n<ul class=\"overview\">\r\n \t<li>Saturated fats and <em>trans<\/em> fats, added sugars, and sodium<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nKey Recommendations that are quantitative are provided for several components of the diet that should be limited.
