In single-celled\u00a0organisms, e.g., many Protista, the vegetative cell can simply act as a gamete. In more complex organisms\u00a0specialized regions within the organism take on the role of gametogenesis.\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>Egg Production:<\/strong> meiosis occurs within the ovary; for example, in plants only one of the four products\u00a0of meiosis develops into an egg (the other three degenerate or serve some other function).<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Sperm Production:<\/strong> meiosis occurs within the testes; for example, in plants each original cell (called a\u00a0spermatocyte) that undergoes meiosis produces four viable sperm.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3>Procedure<\/h3>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Examine under low power (100 X) and draw a cross section of an ovary from a prepared slide.\u00a0Make a second drawing of a follicle under high power (400 X). In single-celled\u00a0organisms, e.g., many Protista, the vegetative cell can simply act as a gamete. In more complex organisms\u00a0specialized regions within the organism take on the role of gametogenesis.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Egg Production:<\/strong> meiosis occurs within the ovary; for example, in plants only one of the four products\u00a0of meiosis develops into an egg (the other three degenerate or serve some other function).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sperm Production:<\/strong> meiosis occurs within the testes; for example, in plants each original cell (called a\u00a0spermatocyte) that undergoes meiosis produces four viable sperm.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Procedure<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Examine under low power (100 X) and draw a cross section of an ovary from a prepared slide.\u00a0Make a second drawing of a follicle under high power (400 X). Include one or more follicles in your\u00a0drawing. Each follicle contains an egg, known as an oocyte. <strong>Label<\/strong>\u00a0the following: follicle and outer\u00a0ovary wall.<\/li>\n<li>Examine a prepared slide of testes cross section under high power. Note the numerous canals with\u00a0sperm.
