If you have clear goals, you will be more confident and appear more organized, and it\u2019s more likely that you will see results. Your customers are busy people, and you don\u2019t want to waste their time. They will appreciate your organization and will be more likely to trust your judgment if you come prepared. You also don\u2019t want to waste <em class=\"im_emphasis\">your<\/em> time or your company\u2019s time. You know it will primarily be an information-gathering session because you need to know more before you can propose a workable, specific solution. However, if you go into the meeting with a vague plan like \u201cI want to find out more about my prospect\u2019s business,\u201d you won\u2019t accomplish much.<span id=\"fwk-125752-fn08_027\" class=\"im_footnote\">[footnote]Skills Connection, \u201cHow to Get Better Results from your Sales Meetings,\u201d video, March 3, 2008, <a class=\"im_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1P6bU1efZbI\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1P6bU1efZbI<\/a> (accessed July 15, 2009).[\/footnote]<\/span> Instead, you might come up with a goal similar to the one mentioned earlier: \u201cBy the end of this meeting, I want to know who my prospect\u2019s current vendors are, what issues or challenges he faces with this vendor\u2019s services, and what three priorities he has for future purchases.\u201d This objective, like all effective precall objectives, is <span class=\"im_margin_term\"><span class=\"im_glossterm\">SMART<\/span><\/span>. That is, the goal is <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">S<\/strong>pecific, <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">M<\/strong>easurable, <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">A<\/strong>ctionable, <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">R<\/strong>ealistic, and <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">T<\/strong>ime-bound.<span id=\"fwk-125752-fn08_028\" class=\"im_footnote\">[footnote]Virtual Strategist, \u201cHow to Set SMART Goals,\u201d video, M3 Planning, October 17, 2008, <a class=\"im_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uThBb3kGf4k\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uThBb3kGf4k<\/a> (accessed July 15, 2009).[\/footnote]<\/span>\r\n<ul id=\"fwk-125752-ch08_s03_s02_l01\" class=\"im_itemizedlist im_editable im_block\">\r\n\t<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Specific<\/strong>. The goal should clearly define which actions you want your customer to take, what information you hope to convey, and\/or what information you hope to learn from your sales call. In the example cited by Gary Duncan, the salesperson is setting out to gather three specific pieces of information.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Measurable<\/strong>. You want to be able to measure the results of your efforts so that you\u2019ll know at the end of your sales call how close you came to achieving what you set out to do. This will help you strategize about which actions to take next. The first two parts of the example are measurable with a simple yes or no (Did I find out the names of the current vendors? Did I identify issues and challenges my customer has encountered?), and the last part of the goal is quantifiable (How many of my customer\u2019s priorities was I able to help him articulate?).<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Actionable<\/strong>. If a goal is actionable or attainable, it\u2019s something you can actually <em class=\"im_emphasis\">do<\/em>. It might involve asking questions, explaining something, or suggesting something. Whatever the case, it should be something on which you have the ability to act. In some instances, the actionable goal might be as simple as closing the sale: \u201cBy the end of the meeting, I plan to convince my prospect to sign a contract.\u201d<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Realistic<\/strong>. If you set your goal too high or try to move your sales process along too quickly, you will only be setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. Ask yourself, \u201cWhat can I reasonably hope to accomplish given the current situation with my prospect?\u201d If you decide you want to get appointments with ten top people in the organization during your first contact with the company, or if you intend to close a major account by your first call, you will probably not be able to achieve what you set out to do.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Time-bound<\/strong>. Not only should you know <em class=\"im_emphasis\">what<\/em> you hope to achieve, but you should also know <em class=\"im_emphasis\">when<\/em> you hope to have it accomplished. However, if you go into the meeting with a vague plan like \u201cI want to find out more about my prospect\u2019s business,\u201d you won\u2019t accomplish much.<span id=\"fwk-125752-fn08_027\" class=\"im_footnote\"><a class=\"footnote\" title=\"Skills Connection, \u201cHow to Get Better Results from your Sales Meetings,\u201d video, March 3, 2008, http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1P6bU1efZbI (accessed July 15, 2009).\" id=\"return-footnote-105-6\" href=\"#footnote-105-6\" aria-label=\"Footnote 6\"><sup class=\"footnote\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Instead, you might come up with a goal similar to the one mentioned earlier: \u201cBy the end of this meeting, I want to know who my prospect\u2019s current vendors are, what issues or challenges he faces with this vendor\u2019s services, and what three priorities he has for future purchases.\u201d This objective, like all effective precall objectives, is <span class=\"im_margin_term\"><span class=\"im_glossterm\">SMART<\/span><\/span>. That is, the goal is <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">S<\/strong>pecific, <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">M<\/strong>easurable, <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">A<\/strong>ctionable, <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">R<\/strong>ealistic, and <strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">T<\/strong>ime-bound.<span id=\"fwk-125752-fn08_028\" class=\"im_footnote\"><a class=\"footnote\" title=\"Virtual Strategist, \u201cHow to Set SMART Goals,\u201d video, M3 Planning, October 17, 2008, http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uThBb3kGf4k (accessed July 15, 2009).\" id=\"return-footnote-105-7\" href=\"#footnote-105-7\" aria-label=\"Footnote 7\"><sup class=\"footnote\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul id=\"fwk-125752-ch08_s03_s02_l01\" class=\"im_itemizedlist im_editable im_block\">\n<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Specific<\/strong>. The goal should clearly define which actions you want your customer to take, what information you hope to convey, and\/or what information you hope to learn from your sales call. In the example cited by Gary Duncan, the salesperson is setting out to gather three specific pieces of information.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Measurable<\/strong>. You want to be able to measure the results of your efforts so that you\u2019ll know at the end of your sales call how close you came to achieving what you set out to do. This will help you strategize about which actions to take next. The first two parts of the example are measurable with a simple yes or no (Did I find out the names of the current vendors? Did I identify issues and challenges my customer has encountered?), and the last part of the goal is quantifiable (How many of my customer\u2019s priorities was I able to help him articulate?).<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Actionable<\/strong>. If a goal is actionable or attainable, it\u2019s something you can actually <em class=\"im_emphasis\">do<\/em>. It might involve asking questions, explaining something, or suggesting something. Whatever the case, it should be something on which you have the ability to act. In some instances, the actionable goal might be as simple as closing the sale: \u201cBy the end of the meeting, I plan to convince my prospect to sign a contract.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Realistic<\/strong>. If you set your goal too high or try to move your sales process along too quickly, you will only be setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. Ask yourself, \u201cWhat can I reasonably hope to accomplish given the current situation with my prospect?\u201d If you decide you want to get appointments with ten top people in the organization during your first contact with the company, or if you intend to close a major account by your first call, you will probably not be able to achieve what you set out to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"im_emphasis im_bold\">Time-bound<\/strong>. Not only should you know <em class=\"im_emphasis\">what<\/em> you hope to achieve, but you should also know <em class=\"im_emphasis\">when<\/em> you hope to have it accomplished.
