Lab 10 Materials

Materials

  • Student tray containing the following:
    • 3 50 mL beakers.
    • Saturated Ca(OH)2.  *This stock solution will be prepared 1 week in advance to ensure adequate time to solublizeIt is prepared by adding 6 g of Ca(OH)2 to ~200 mL of boiled, deionized water.
    • Saturated Ca(OH)2 in Ca2+.  *This stock solution will be prepared 1 week in advance to ensure adequate time to solublizeIt is prepared by adding 6 g of Ca(OH)2 and 3 g CaCl2 to ~200 mL of boiled, deionized water.
    • Saturated Mg(OH)2.  *This stock solution will be prepared 1 week in advance to ensure adequate time to solublizeIt is prepared by adding 5 g of Ba(OH)2 to ~200 mL of boiled, deionized water.
    • Saturated Ba(OH)2 in Ba2+.  *This stock solution will be prepared 1 week in advance to ensure adequate time to solublizeIt is prepared by adding 5 g of Ba(OH)2 and 2 g BaCl2 to ~200 mL of boiled, deionized water.
    • pH probes
    • Buffer solutions to standardize the probes.

Safety and Notes

  • It is important to follow the safety guidelines below while performing this lab.
  • Safety goggles must be worn at all times.
  • All containers containing chemicals must be labeled according to the TCC policy.
  • The solutions MUST be capped tightly at ALL TIMES not in use.  If the calcium hydroxide solution is exposed to air, it may react with carbon dioxide and form highly insoluble calcium carbonate and affect your numbers.
  • All solutions can be discarded down the drain with copious amounts of water.
