This week’s lab is based on the common ion effect. Students will calculate the molar solubility and solubility product of calcium hydroxide and another hydroxide compound. Students will evaluate the effect that the addition of a common ion has on the pH of the solution and draw conclusions about how the molar solubility is affected.
Objectives: After completing this week’s assignments you will be able to:
- Calculate the [OH–] using a pH probe.
- Calculate the molar solubility of Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2.
- Calculate the solubility constants of Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2.
