Experimental Procedure

A. Deriving Information from Molecular Models
1. There are 10 molecular models placed around the classroom. Carefully draw the complete

structure of each compound in the space provided. Each atom is represented as:

Element

Color

Carbon

Black

Hydrogen

White

Nitrogen

Blue

Oxygen

Red

Green

Halogen (Chlorine)

  1. Once you have obtained all 10 structures, determine the class of organic compound present.
  2. Include the IUPAC name of the each compound. Be careful to use correct spelling and neat handwriting as a small deviation changes the implied meaning (for example, consider the difference between an alkane and an alkene).
  3. Draw the line-angle structure for each compound.
  4. Include the condensed structure for each compound.

B. Obtaining Structural Data from the Condensed Formula

  1. There are 5 chemicals in the hood. For each, record the name and (if provided) thecondensed structure from the bottle.
  2. Include any observations in the space provided. Include the state of matter, boiling point, formula mass and other relevant information.
  3. Apply what you know about the IUPAC system of naming and draw the complete structureof each compound.

Pre-lab Assignment/Questions

N o t e – this pre-lab must be finished before you come to lab. (Please see syllabus for how to submit this assignment.)
