In this session, we continue to discuss planning and prioritizing. Procrastination is an easy habit pattern to fall into. It is much harder to form a habit than it is to break one, but with repetition it can be done. A habit is anything we do over and over again. Often time we only think of bad habits but there are good habits too. We must be our own cheerleader and pat ourselves on the back by celebrating every accomplishment large or small. In the video below we see Randy Pausch again reprising a portion of his last lecture. This clip focused on managing our time. We must be in charge of setting our priorities. Too often we are afraid to say no because we worry about what others will think or letting them down. But we must truly be aware of our agreements. If we say we are going to do something we must keep our word; this is how we live with integrity. If we say “yes” to a request only to back out later, it does not build our character. So before automatically saying “yes”, make sure to look at your time management plan – where does this item fall? Does it help you get closer to your goals?
You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage — pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically — to say “no” to other things. And the way to do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.” -Stephen Covey
