M11 Overview: Learning Styles

In this session, we will take an honest look at ourselves.  What habit patterns are promoting our success and which ones are keeping us from our full potential?  What might be a positive strategy to implement to get us closer to our goals?

One of the first steps for becoming a successful student is to understand the learning process itself. Certain characteristics of effective learning, including the four-step learning cycle, are true of all people. At the same time, people have different learning styles. Understanding these processes is important for maximizing your own learning while in college.

Course & Module Objectives

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Increase self-awareness of personality type and learning-style and demonstrate the ability to take personal responsibility by creating personal and educational goals.
    • Modify vocabulary to practice the language of personal responsibility that leads to success
  • Develop effective application of study skills such as note taking, listening, textbook usage, test preparation, concentration, memory skills, and time management.
    • Examine the benefits of being an active participant in the community (college, city, neighborhood)
  • Explore and apply critical and creative thinking strategies.
    • Assess time usage and ability to prioritize
    • Critique positive and self-defeating habit patterns and generate a plan for areas in need of adjustment
  • Examine personal and wellness issues and develop stress management strategies.
    • Confirm the difference between hard and soft skills
    • Identify characteristics of a successful student
