A rhetorical analysis requires taking a closer look at the persuasiveness of a message. In this discussion forum, you will find an advertisement of any sort—a video, print, or radio ad—and complete a critical analysis.
Discussion Instructions
STEP 1: Post a link to the advertisement you’ve selected. Analyze its effectiveness by first answering the following questions:
- What is the purpose of the ad?
- What is the argument of the ad?
- Who is the “author” of the ad?
- Who is the intended audience for the ad?
- What is the tone of the ad?
- What is the style and tone of the ad?
- What kind of supporting appeals, evidence, or examples does this ad use or rely on?
STEP 2: In a well-developed paragraph (5–7 sentences), explain whether you believe the ad is effective or ineffective in achieving its purpose, based on your analysis above. Your paragraph should include:
- A clear claim about the ad’s effectiveness.
- Evidence from the ad to support your claim (e.g., specific wording, imagery, or data).
- Support for your evidence, using concepts from the reading on critical analysis in this module.
- (Optional) Consider addressing potential counterarguments—how might someone else view the ad differently?
STEP 3: Respond to two classmates’ posts (in at least 75 words each). Beyond simply agreeing or disagreeing with their analysis, engage thoughtfully by doing one or more of the following:
- Extend their point with new evidence, examples, or perspectives.
- Bring up a counterpoint, exception, or challenging question.
- Offer a new approach or highlight an overlooked factor.
Aim for meaningful discussion—your response should show that you are thinking critically about their perspective, not just restating or summarizing their ideas.
