I don't even know where to start.\"\r\n<strong>You<\/strong>: \"Okay, now I <em>need<\/em> to know. Where were you? Did it happen to you or to someone else?\"\r\n<strong>Friend<\/strong>: \"Someone else. It saw it on the way to class.\"\r\n<strong>You<\/strong>: \"Well, what happened? Asking open ended questions when choosing a topic allows you to explore the numerous sides of an argument. Were they soaked afterwards? Did anyone help? Did they say anything?\r\n\r\nIn conversation with someone, it's natural to ask questions to learn more. Much in the same way that actively engaging in a conversation helps you paint a picture about a situation, you can also ask questions to learn more information about a writing topic.\r\n\r\nAsking defining questions is an especially good way to help with the very first step of the writing process\u2014narrowing a broad topic to help you develop a central idea and supporting details.\r\n<h2>Beginning with Questioning<\/h2>\r\nDefining questions help to take a broad topic and narrow it down to create a focal point. For example, imagine your assignment is to write about taxes.
