Inference involves both evidence AND logical reasoning.[\/caption]\r\n\r\nIn this workshop, we've looked at three of the most important moves in academic work: analysis, inference, and synthesis.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Analysis<\/strong> is the process of methodically breaking something down to gain a better understanding of it.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Making an <strong>inference<\/strong>\u00a0means\u00a0coming to a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning (in some cases, \"reading between the lines\").<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Synthesis<\/strong>\u00a0is the combining of two or more things to produce something new.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"textbox exercises\">\r\n<h3>Writing workshop<\/h3>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Read this passage from the essay, then answer the question that follows:\r\n<div class=\"textbox\" style=\"font-size: 1rem; background-color: white;\">The western \u201ccowboys and Indians\u201d mystique, perpetuated in novels, rodeos, and Wild West shows, was rooted in romantic nostalgia and, perhaps, in the anxieties that many felt in the late-nineteenth century\u2019s new seemingly \u201csoft\u201d industrial world of factory and office work. The mythical cowboy\u2019s \u201caggressive masculinity\u201d was the seemingly perfect antidote for middle- and upper-class, city-dwelling Americans who feared they \u201chad become over-civilized\u201d and longed for what Theodore Roosevelt called the \u201cstrenuous life.\u201d<\/div>\r\nThis paragraph contains an example of \u201cinference,\u201d in that the author makes an inference about\u00a0why Wild West figures like Buffalo Bill Cody were so popular in America in the 1880s and 1890s.
