If you cannot summarize a subject, even if you have memorized all the facts about it, you can be absolutely sure that you have not learned it. And, if you truly learn the subject, you will still be able to summarize it months or years from now.\r\n\r\nProficient students may monitor their understanding of a text by summarizing as they read. They understand that if they can write a one- or two-sentence summary of each paragraph after reading it, then that is a good sign that they have correctly understood it. If they can not summarize the main idea of the paragraph, they know that comprehension has broken down and they need to use fix-up strategies to repair understanding.\r\n\r\nSummarizing\u00a0consists of\u00a0two\u00a0important skills:\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>identifying the important material in the text, and<\/li>\r\n\t<li>restating the text in your own words.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nSince writing a summary consists of omitting minor information, it will always be shorter than the original text.\r\n<h3>How to Write a Summary<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>A summary begins with an\u00a0<em>introductory sentence<\/em>\u00a0that states the text\u2019s title, author and main thesis or subject.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>A summary contains the main\u00a0<em>thesis<\/em>\u00a0(or main point of the text), restated in your own words.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>A summary is\u00a0<em>written in your own words<\/em>.\u00a0It contains few or no quotes.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>A summary is\u00a0<em>always shorter than the original text<\/em>, often about 1\/3 as long as the original.\u00a0\u00a0It is the ultimate \u201cfat-free\u201d writing. \u00a0An article or paper may be summarized in a few sentences or a couple of paragraphs. A book may be summarized in an article or a short paper. \u00a0A very large book may be summarized in a smaller book.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>A summary should\u00a0<em>contain all the major points<\/em>\u00a0of the original text,\u00a0but should\u00a0<em>ignore most of the fine details<\/em>, examples, illustrations or explanations.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The backbone of any summary is formed by\u00a0<em>critical information<\/em>\u00a0(key names, dates, places, ideas, events, words and numbers).
