Learning Outcomes
By the end of this section, you will be able to:
- Represent inequalities using an inequality symbol
- Represent inequalities on a number line
- Express verbal statements as mathematical expressions
- Convert from scientific to standard notation
- Convert standard notation to scientific notation
We use probability theory to estimate the chance of real world events. These events are often described verbally, and we need to translate verbal statements to algebraic expressions. This takes practice, but becomes easier with time. In this section you will learn to look for key words and phrases to translate verbal statements into algebraic expressions and inequalities. Some probabilities will be very small numbers, and you will need to understand how to represent them using scientific notation. We will end this section with an explanation of converting between scientific and standard notation.
Recall for success
Look for red boxes like this one throughout the text. They’ll show up just in time to give helpfulĀ reminders of the math you’ll need, right where you’ll need it.
