Introduction to Forces

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the forces acting on an object.
      • Recognize when each of the following forces act on an object:
        • a gravitational force due to an object’s interaction with the Earth’s gravitational field
        • normal and friction components of a contact force due to the object being in contact with a surface
        • a tension force due to the object being pulled by a rope, string, cable, etc.
        • an applied force due to the object being pushed by something else
      • For a particular force, identify the following:
        • the two objects interacting to generate the force,
        • which object the force is exerted on, and
        • which object the force is exerted by.
