Instructor Guide Z-Score and the Empirical Rule: Corequisite Support

While this support activity is designed for a face-to-face, synchronous delivery, it should be noted that supporting text and interactive examples have been embedded in the digital assignment page to assist asynchronous or hybrid course delivery and to be made more accessible to students performing make-up work.

Suggested instructional plan for synchronous active-learning

Before starting Question 1, make sure students understand that they are given the mean and standard deviation for the entire population of American arm spans. Have students work in pairs or small groups to complete this corequisite support activity.

In Questions 1, 3, and 5, ensure students round to the nearest hundredth and include units of measure in their answers.

Be ready to assist students with the order of operations in Questions 2, 4, and 6. Make sure students understand the connection between a negative answer and “below the mean.” As an extension question and a check for understanding, it might be a good idea to ask: “What does a positive answer mean?” (Answer: The value is above [greater] than the mean.)

Students might struggle to understand precisely what went wrong in Question 9. Be ready to display the answer using a document camera and discuss as a class. In Questions 12-14, emphasize that the units of measure cancel out and that this is an important result to remember in upcoming lessons.
