While this support activity is designed for a face-to-face, synchronous delivery, it should be noted that supporting text and interactive examples have been embedded in the digital assignment page to assist asynchronous or hybrid course delivery and to be made more accessible to students performing make-up work.
Notes for synchronous active-learning delivery
This corequisite support activity provides an opportunity for students to practice using fractions, decimals, and percentages to prepare for future activities.
- For students who need to review the conceptual basis for fractions, decimals, and percentages, it may help to start with base 10 blocks or other visual representations.
- Most of the calculations are based on a table that students complete in Question 2, Part A. You may want to stop to check their work at that point before moving on.
- This support activity can be used for both conceptual practice and calculator practice. As you discuss the answers, prompt students to share multiple approaches, especially for Question 2, Parts B through D, where the simplified fractions are relatively easy to convert to decimals and percentages without a calculator.
- Students may immediately compare percentages in Question 2, Part G because of the scaffolding in the previous parts. If they do, prompt them to consider whether comparing counts would have led to the same conclusion.
