In the next preview assignment and in the next class, you will need to be able to read dotplots and discuss randomness. Dotplots
Question 1
1) Suppose you are interested in determining the average price of a gallon ofregular unleaded gasoline in the United States on a particular date. The gas prices for regular unleaded gasoline from a random sample of 18 gas stations across the country on this date are shown in the following table.
| $3.33 | $2.48 | $2.35 | $2.59 |
| $2.46 | $2.97 | $2.59 | $2.60 |
| $2.96 | $2.57 | $3.21 | $2.55 |
| $2.87 | $2.49 | $3.56 | |
| $2.64 | $2.42 | $2.59 |
Part A: Using the following scale, create a dotplot by plotting a “dot” for each gas price.

Part B: Based on the data in this sample, is $3.40a reasonable estimate of the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the United States on this particular date? Explain.
Part C: If we were to collect another random sample of 18 gas stations chosen from the population of all gas stations across the countryand then plot the gas prices in the sample, would we get the same dotplot? Explain.
Randomness
Randomness is all around us. While randomness is sometimes viewed as an annoying attribute that complicates our lives, you can actually employ randomness to help solve problems. Though randomness may seem unpredictable, we can often quantify our uncertainty in a particular outcome using probability.
Question 2
2) Let’s start by investigating the idea of randomness through the following data collection.
Part A: Randomly select an integer between 1 and 10, inclusively, and write it down.
Part B: If each number were equally likely to be chosen, what percentageof the class would you expect to choose the number7?
Part C: Combine your chosen random number from Part A with those from the rest of the class by drawing a dotplot of these values. In general, were each of the numbers equally likely to be chosen by you and your classmates? Based on these observations, do you think it is reasonable to rely on your own intuition to generate random numbers? Explain.
