Instructor Guide 1D: Corequisite Support

While this support activity is designed for a face-to-face, synchronous delivery, it should be noted that supporting text and interactive examples have been embedded in the digital assignment page to assist asynchronous or hybrid course delivery and to be made more accessible to students performing make-up work.

Notes for synchronous active-learning delivery

This corequisite support activity deals explicitly with the terms “variability” and “exact answer” that are seen throughout In-Class Activity 1.D.

Students may struggle with interpreting what is meant by an “exact answer” or what is meant by “variability in the data.” To support students in this struggle, consider structuring the class so that there are opportunities for individual reading and processing. Pair up students or have students work in small groups to answer the questions.

Here is the suggested flow for this support activity:

  1. Spend time reading individually (about five minutes).
  2. Answer Question 1 in pairs. Briefly discuss the reading and answers to Question 1 as a class to assess understanding (about five minutes).
  3. Spend time reading individually (about five minutes).
  4. Answer Questions 2 and 3 in small groups (10 minutes).
  5. Debrief as a class (five minutes).
