While this support activity is designed for a face-to-face, synchronous delivery, it should be noted that supporting text and interactive examples have been embedded in the digital assignment page to assist asynchronous or hybrid course delivery and to be made more accessible to students performing make-up work.
Notes for synchronous active-learning delivery
Give students some time at the beginning of class to read the introductory scenario in a quiet environment. Have students who finish reading early move ahead and begin working at their own pace.
After students have had some time to read through the scenario, bring the class together to make sure everyone agrees on what the American Heart Association (AHA) recommendation is saying. Check for understanding by asking students how much exercise participants had in this study (150 minutes per week) and how they decide if participants met the AHA recommendation (average heart rate above 70% of their maximum heart rate).
The arithmetic skills in this corequisite support activity have been practiced in the Corequisite Support Activities [1C] and [1E], so many students should be able to work through these questions on their own.
