Even though\u00a0students have been calculating these quantities using technology before this point,\u00a0calculating them by hand may make it easier for students to see the effect of changing\u00a0one or more data values on the mean and median. Students will need to understand the\u00a0computations behind these measures of center in upcoming preview assignments and\u00a0in-class activities, and they will need to be able to use technology to do so in upcoming\u00a0practice assignments.\r\n\r\nStudents will be asked to verify their computations using the Describing and Exploring\u00a0Quantitative Variables tool at <a href=\"https:\/\/dcmathpathways.shinyapps.io\/EDA_quantitative\/\">https:\/\/dcmathpathways.shinyapps.io\/EDA_quantitative\/<\/a>.\r\n\r\nConsider having students approach this task in small groups. If students don\u2019t have\u00a0access to computers or phones, consider convening the class briefly to demonstrate the\u00a0use of technology on the overhead mid-class.\u00a0As you get into computation of the median by hand, students may be confused when\u00a0there appears to be no \u201cmiddle\u201d value of the dataset (since the dataset has an even\u00a0number of observations). Help them to see that they must find the mean of the\u00a0innermost values and prompt them to think about why we can consider this to be the\u00a0\u201cmiddle\u201d value.\r\n\r\nStudents may struggle interpreting the median and the mean.
