They should be able to\u00a0Identify an observational study, distinguish between experimental and observational studies, and identify possible confounding factors that might explain an apparent association.\r\n<h2>Synchronous Delivery and Activity Flow<\/h2>\r\nThe sample activity delivery below assumes a face-to-face class meeting but can be adapted to a fully online or hybrid delivery by using break-out rooms for pairs and small groups.\r\n<h3>Frame the activity (3 minutes)<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Question1\u00a0 -- working in pairs\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">S2, C4, V1, V4, O3<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; text-align: initial;\">Have students discuss Question 1 for approximately three\u00a0minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Have a few pairs share their answers to Question 1.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If necessary, prompt students to reflect on how smoking habits relate\u00a0to depression in the example from the preview assignment: \u201cWhat\u00a0was being studied in the preview assignment? Keep two lists as a visual aid for the students: one list consists of the qualities of experimental studies, and the other list consists of\u00a0the qualities of observational studies.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">In Questions 5 and 6, remind students of the definition of a confounding variable, if necessary. Ask them:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">\u201cCan you think of another way to link higher reading scores with bigger feet?\u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">\u201cWhy else might residents of low-density rural areas suffer from fatal cancer diagnoses?\u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Emphasize that experimental studies have treatments, random assignment of participants, cause-and-effect relationships, and \u201ccontrol.\u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Emphasize observational studies not having different treatments, not having randomization of participants to treatments, and having a lack of control\/presence of confounding variables.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Have groups share their answers to Questions 5 and 6.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Wrap-up\/transition (5 minutes)<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Encourage students to keep a list that compares experimental studies vs. observational studies.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Encourage students to further brainstorm why each type of study is necessary.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Have students refer back to the Objectives for the activity and check the ones they recognize.
