They should be able to\u00a0describe the role that blocking plays in an experiment, identify the basic principles of the completely randomized block design, and eescribe how to use a completely randomized block design for a given research\u00a0objective.\r\n<h2>Synchronous Delivery and Activity Flow<\/h2>\r\nThe sample activity delivery below assumes a face-to-face class meeting but can be adapted to a fully online or hybrid delivery by using break-out rooms for pairs and small groups.\r\n<h3>Frame the activity (3 minutes)<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Question 1 -- think-pair-share\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">S2, C4, V1, V4, O3<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Allow students one minute to think about the role that\u00a0randomization plays in the experiment. Then allow each student\u00a0to pair up with the person adjacent to them to share their\u00a0thoughts.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Examine student responses by allowing select students to share\u00a0their responses.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Help students understand that randomization allows the\u00a0researcher to create comparable groups\u2014that is, groups that\u00a0have similar distributions of the other factors. In other words, the\u00a0researcher is trying to ensure that the factors in one group are\u00a0similar to the factors in the other group. For example, the health\u00a0conditions of a subject could play a role in how subjects respond\u00a0to a treatment (in this case, the Salk vaccine injection or the\u00a0placebo injection).
