Understanding the basics of economic theory is undeniably advantageous to students. Whether preparing for further study in economics, the social sciences, or business, students need to build a strong economic foundation upon the most topical material available. Through open course materials designed to get students thinking like economists, this course uses real-world examples to explore how firms make economic choices. The course begins by orienting students to economic basics such as modeling with graphing and algebra.
Key topics in macroeconomics include GDP and unemployment, inflation and price indexes, the business cycle, economic growth, the AS-AD model, Keynesian and Neoclassical Economics, fiscal and monetary policy, and globalization. Faculty members may readily adapt the course’s OER content to include their own resources and material or modify modules and topics to reflect new and fascinating questions facing economists.
This course, based on OpenStax Principles of Economics, was developed by Steve Greenlaw and Lumen Learning, with contributing work from Clark Aldrich and Jennifer Pakula.
