Health Studies (HS03, HS04, HS06)

Note:  There are 3 distinct tracks within Health Studies, (Clinical – HS03, Community – HS04, and Healthcare Administration HS06)

Important Note for Health Studies Students Applying to Competitive Programs (HS03 Clinical) – It is imperative that students become familiar with the Admission Info Sheet for the competitive health program(s) to which they are applying.  https://www.monroecc.edu/depts/healthprof/

It is highly recommended that advisors review the info sheet in its entirety with the student.  It is also highly recommended that both advisors and students attend a Nursing Admission Information Session to get the most up-to-date information regarding admission, as well as information about the career and alternative careers in the case that the student does not get a seat in the competitive program.  These sessions are typically held twice per semester.  No RSVP is required.

Curricular nuances Combinations to Avoid:  For those in the Clinical Track (HS03), although it is permissible to take BIO145 and BIO202 at the same time, it is not recommended due to the rigorous nature of the sciences. Students also tend to do better in fall or spring semesters in comparison with summer when it comes to rigorous science coursework.
Coursework availability Most coursework in Health Studies is available online and at various times.  Students can complete the entire Healthcare Admin track online with selection of certain electives.  Most of the Community Health track can be completed online. For Health Studies students who need Anatomy and Physiology, those courses are not offered online.
Resources available/academic support Tutoring and NSEC are strongly encouraged for science coursework

Career considerations

NOTE:  None of the items listed below are issues with the Health Studies degree in and of itself.

Physical requirements For students who are taking Health Studies to take point bearing courses to apply to competitive health programs, they should consult the specific information for the particular health career.
Licensures needed to enter profession For students who are taking Health Studies to take point bearing courses to apply to competitive health programs, they should consult the specific information for the particular health career.
Background checks For students who are taking Health Studies to take point bearing courses to apply to competitive health programs, they should consult the specific information for the particular health career.
Drug testing required For students who are taking Health Studies to take point bearing courses to apply to competitive health programs, they should consult the specific information for the particular health career.

Transfer considerations?

Most common transfer school(s) HS03 Clinical Track – Students pursuing BSN transfer – St John Fisher, Roberts Wesleyan, Nazareth and Brockport (Brockport now requires students to have 15 Brockport credits to be eligible for their BSN program)

Prerequisite courses for BSN transfer application are already required within HS03. Refer to specific transfer school for optimal elective choices.

HS04 Community Track – SUNY Brockport, Nazareth, St John Fisher, SUNY Cortland (Some transfer programs require BIO 134/135)

HS06 Healthcare Administration
–SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland, Nazareth, Roberts Wesleyan. BUS 206 and MAR 200 are recommended electives. Prerequisites for these courses have been waived for HS06 students per Chair of the Business Department.

Math requirements for transfer Math:  MTH 160, Statistics, is the required math course for all three Health Studies tracks.
Some Healthcare Administration transfer programs may not require statistics and with confirmation of that information, an alternate math may be substituted, however, another Tech Lit course must be included within the degree if MTH 160 is not taken.
