New, Transfer, and Returning Student Advising
New, transfer, and returning student advising is based on pathway. Each campus location (Brighton, Downtown, ATC, and PSTF) offers incoming students advisement appointments. At the Brighton Campus, incoming students are seen by professional advisors in the Advisement and Transfer Services office. At the Downtown Campus, incoming students are seen by Student Services. Upon acceptance to the college, all new students are assigned to a professional advisor with expertise in their pathway. Students are notified of this advisor and are encouraged to make an appointment to discuss their educational and career goals prior to registering for courses.
Continuing Student Advising
At MCC, continuing students are advised by faculty advisors and others in Academic Services (for example, School Specialists). Each term, new students are considered “continuing” around week 4 of the semester (as they prepare to register for their second term). Students are assigned to faculty advisors based on a number of factors, chief among which is the advisor’s expertise in the student’s pathway. Students are notified via email of their advisor assignment and encouraged to contact their assigned advisor.
Continuing students may still seek assistance from the advisement center for concerns such as SAP, Excelsior compliance, FACE concerns, change of major/pathway, applying for graduation, transfer planning, and more. If you are unsure whether your student’s concern is something that they should seek assistance from the advisement center, contact the advising hotline during open hours x5279, or call the advisement center’s front desk at 292-2400.
In order for students to be assigned an advisor with expertise in their pathway, it is important that faculty advisors have pathway expertise coded in Banner. This expertise is updated by Academic Services.
