Confidentiality (FERPA)

A student can grant MCC permission for a third party to have access to information in their education records (grades, billing, and other non-directory information) through their MyMCC account.  Advisors should be aware that students can waive their FERPA rights, allowing MCC staff and faculty to speak with parents/guardians. If a student has signed this waiver, it will be noted on their MyMCC account under Student Records – Records Release. It is also noted in Banner Self Services: Faculty Services> Student Information Menu> FERPA Waiver Information.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA or the Buckley Amendment) is a United States federal law that governs the access of educational information and records to public entities such as potential employers, publicly funded educational institutions, and foreign governments.

This law prohibits MCC employees from sharing any information regarding a student to any third party except for what is considered “directory information.” MCC has designated certain types of information as “directory information.” This includes the:

  • Student’s name
  • E-mail Address
  • Picture
  • Major Fields of Study
  • Dates of Attendance
  • Full or Part-Time status
  • Awards or Degrees received
  • Most Previous Educational Agency Attended
  • Participation in Recognized Activities and Sports
  • Weight and Height of Athletic Teams

Detailed information regarding FERPA can be found on the MCC website at: https://www.monroecc.edu/etsdbs/mccatpub.nsf/Online%20Catalog%20by%20Title/family-educational-rights-and-privacy-act-(ferpa)?OpenDocumen
