Definitions: Pathway, Program, Major

At MCC, students are coded by three different codes:

Pathway

Pathway: The primary focus of advising conversations, advisor assignments, and communications to students. Indicates the student’s goal. If a student is admitted to their program of choice, their pathway should match their major. If a student is not yet admitted to their program of choice, their pathway will reflect their desired program. A student’s pathway is what determines their School as well as their advisor assignment.

  • Program: Indicates the MCC degree, approved through all curriculum processes, that the student will receive. Financial aid course eligibility reflects courses in a student’s program.
  • Major: Still used for tracking official 2+2s and tracks within a program (such as the tracks of Health Studies or Engineering). May reflect placement or campus information, however, the fields in Degree Works and Banner Self Service are the most reliable places to find information on students’ placement and modality. (Note: if a student is admitted to a 2+2 program at a transfer institution, their major will reflect the 2+2 code. If a student’s major does not have a 2+2 code, they are not admitted to a 2+2.)
