Talk about the new nursing admission requirements.\u00a0 Explain that these are pretty typical requirements for all RN programs and the expectations are set by state and national accrediting bodies.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Show genuine interest and concern. Tell the student that this is a \u201ctough conversation that we\u2019re going to have.\u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Refer to career assessments online through Career Services website. You and the student could even do the short version of Career Coach.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If you\u2019re working with a student who is early on in their program and you see some areas that may prove to be difficult going forward, ensure the student that you\u2019re setting them up to have parallel plans. Many of their first and second semester classes can apply to other majors.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Offer ideas for shadowing, information interviews, career panels\/forums. Rochester General Hospital allows shadowing opportunities (see link below).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Five Questions to Ask:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>How\/why did you first become interested in nursing?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How do you envision yourself helping people?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Do you work? Where?\u00a0 How many hours?\u00a0 (This provides so much insight!)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Why don\u2019t we see how this next semester goes and we\u2019ll reassess things mid-semester?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If you were to do something different, what would it look like?
