{"id":89,"date":"2018-12-06T15:57:54","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T15:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/mcc-advisorhandbook\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=89"},"modified":"2021-10-08T16:00:27","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T16:00:27","slug":"note-taking","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/mcc-advisorhandbook\/chapter\/note-taking\/","title":{"raw":"Taking Notes","rendered":"Taking Notes"},"content":{"raw":"<div>\r\n<h2><strong>Professional and Ethical Responsibility<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nThe professional and ethical responsibilities for viewing, entering, changing, and sharing academic information about a student are described in the National Academic Advising Association\u2019s Statement of Core Values of Academic Advising:\r\n\r\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Advisors respect the rights of students to have information about themselves kept confidential.\u00a0 Advisors share information with others about students and their programs only when both advisor and student believe that information is relevant and will result in increased information or assistance, assessment, and provision of appropriate services to the student.\r\n\r\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Advisors gain access to and use computerized information about students only when that information is relevant to the advising they are doing with that particular student.\u00a0 Advisors enter or change information on students\u2019 records only when legitimately authorized to do so.\r\n\r\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Advisors need to document advising contacts adequately to aid subsequent advising interactions.\r\n<h2><strong>Why take notes?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Creates a record of student\u2019s advising contacts and advice provided.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Creates institutional memory.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Increases advisor efficiency and effectiveness.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Refreshes advisor memory prior to return visits and helps when planning next steps.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Communicates critical information to other College personnel.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Personalizes the advising experience.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><strong>How to take notes in Degree Works<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Go to Degree Works.\u00a0 Make sure you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox.\u00a0 Log in at <a href=\"https:\/\/my.monroecc.edu\/\">my.monroecc.edu<\/a>.\u00a0 Click on the Employees tab.\u00a0 Click on Faculty Essentials.\u00a0 Click on Degree Works login.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Enter student information if not already populated in Degree Works<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Click on Notes tab<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Click \u201cAdd Note\u201d found to the left<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Click dropdown box<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nAlways select 111 *Pathway\/Program* first and enter the correct information.
