But the reality is that any campus is subject to the same influences\u2014indeed, crimes\u2014as the towns and cities that flank the campus. And so it is important to be aware of your surroundings,\u00a0the people near you, and the goings on in your physical spaces and in your virtual spaces at all times.\r\n\r\nIn this topic, we explore college safety concerns, and share tips and resources to help ensure that you are always safe, protected, and no more than a phone call away from help if you need it.\r\n<h3>Safety Consciousness<\/h3>\r\n<em>Safety consciousness<\/em> is a term describing your awareness of hazards, and your alertness to potential danger. In order to have safety consciousness, you must value safety no matter where you are or what time of day it is.\r\n\r\nYour college or university must also be safety conscious\u2014not only by choice, but also by law. In 1990, Congress enacted the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act, which required all schools that receive federal student aid to share information about crime on and around their campuses. The act is now generally just referred to as the Clery Act, in memory of Jeanne Clery, a student killed\u00a0in her dorm room in 1986.\r\n\r\nWhat does the Clery Act require your college to do? If your college is receiving federal student aid, here are the major legal requirements it must comply with:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have emergency notification and evacuation procedures for alerting the campus community about significant emergencies or dangerous situations. Disclose your policies and procedures in the annual security report.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue timely warnings to alert the campus community about crimes that pose a serious or continuing threat to safety. Disclose your policy in the annual security report.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a crime log that records, by date reported, all crimes reported to the campus police or security department.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a fire log that records by date reported, all fires in on-campus student housing facilities.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect crime reports from campus security authorities within the institution.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Request crime statistics from local law enforcement in the jurisdiction where the institution is located.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit crime and fire statistics to the Department of Education via a Web-based data collection.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have missing-student notification procedures to aid in determining if a student is missing, and in notifying law enforcement personnel. Disclose your policy and procedures in the annual security report.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publish an annual security report containing campus security policy disclosures and crime statistics for the previous three years.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publish an annual fire-safety report containing policy disclosures and fire statistics for on-campus student housing facilities for the previous three years.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThis valuable\u00a0set of requirements is important for every student to be aware of. It is readily available to you and your family. You don\u2019t need to be a student to access this information about any school.\r\n<h3>Indicators of School Crime and Safety<\/h3>\r\nThe following video, from the National Center for Education Statistics, gives statistical details about safety and crimes on campus. As you and your college make safety a shared priority, awareness builds and safety measures expand, which creates a safer space for you to learn in. Measures can be extensive. Ask for specifics.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>2<\/td>\r\n<td>What communication procedures are in place for emergencies?<\/td>\r\n<td>Many colleges and universities send emergency phone messages, email messages and text messages to all students, staff, faculty, administrators, board of trustees members, etc. Institutions may have sirens and alarms. Signage on campus may be used for alerts, along with other measures.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>3<\/td>\r\n<td>Can you tell me about campus police and security personnel, and how they coordinate with local police?<\/td>\r\n<td>Your campus should have a full contingent of campus police and security personnel who coordinate closely with local police as and when needed.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>4<\/td>\r\n<td>How are sexual assaults on campus handled?<\/td>\r\n<td>Does the college handle investigations or do local authorities handle investigations? Who should you complain to if you have a problem? What confidentialities are in place?<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>5<\/td>\r\n<td>How do students learn about safety on campus?<\/td>\r\n<td>Many institutions provide students with classes that help them learn how to intervene as bystanders in altercations. Some courses give students advice about other safety measures. You can encourage your institution to offer workshops or other learning opportunities if it doesn\u2019t already offer them.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>6<\/td>\r\n<td>What measures are in place for protecting students who live off-campus?<\/td>\r\n<td>Some schools help students find safe housing off campus. Your school might have an off-campus housing department.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>7<\/td>\r\n<td>To what degree do alcohol and drug abuse pose issues on campus? How are violations handled?<\/td>\r\n<td>One of the best sources of information about drugs and alcohol on campus is fellow students. You can find information about violations in the annual security report.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h3>Tips for Staying Safe<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Walking, driving, traveling:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel with a buddy.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the campus escort service at night, especially if you are alone.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you live off-campus, call someone when you get home.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep moving; don\u2019t linger (especially at night).<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carry pepper spray or pepper gel.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a personal alarm (for example, on a keychain).<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a car, lock it.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>At home:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your windows and doors locked.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep the main door to your home, hall or apartment building locked at all times.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don't let anyone into your dwelling that you don't know.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>On campus:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a close eye on your belongings when you\u2019re in a library.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get a locking device for your laptop.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participate in a college safety program.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be cautious, not paranoid.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Anywhere:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your phone is charged.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know the phone number for Campus Safety.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put emergency numbers in your cell phone.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carry emergency cash.<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak up if you notice something going on.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nFor a truly comprehensive list of tips for staying safe on and off campus, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhsu.edu\/university-police\/Safety-Tips\/#online\" target=\"_blank\">Campus Crime Prevention Personal Safety Tips<\/a> from Fort Hayes State University.\r\n\r\nAlso, don\u2019t hesitate to take advantage of campus and community resources, which may include any of the following:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Web sites, offices, organizations, and individuals with safety information<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus police and campus security<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local police<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual assault and relationship-violence services<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shuttle services<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escort services<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counseling programs<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health programs<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance abuse programs<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local health care centers<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus abuse hotlines<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThe following video focuses on how to stay safe when on campus. In order to have safety consciousness, you must value safety no matter where you are or what time of day it is.<\/p>\n<p>Your college or university must also be safety conscious\u2014not only by choice, but also by law. In 1990, Congress enacted the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act, which required all schools that receive federal student aid to share information about crime on and around their campuses. The act is now generally just referred to as the Clery Act, in memory of Jeanne Clery, a student killed\u00a0in her dorm room in 1986.<\/p>\n<p>What does the Clery Act require your college to do? If your college is receiving federal student aid, here are the major legal requirements it must comply with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have emergency notification and evacuation procedures for alerting the campus community about significant emergencies or dangerous situations. Disclose your policies and procedures in the annual security report.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue timely warnings to alert the campus community about crimes that pose a serious or continuing threat to safety. Disclose your policy in the annual security report.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a crime log that records, by date reported, all crimes reported to the campus police or security department.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a fire log that records by date reported, all fires in on-campus student housing facilities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect crime reports from campus security authorities within the institution.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Request crime statistics from local law enforcement in the jurisdiction where the institution is located.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit crime and fire statistics to the Department of Education via a Web-based data collection.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have missing-student notification procedures to aid in determining if a student is missing, and in notifying law enforcement personnel.
