The pain\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Starts between meals or during the night<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Briefly stops if antacids are\u00a0eaten or taken<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Lasts for minutes to hours<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Comes and goes for several days or weeks<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nPeptic ulcers happen when the acids used in\u00a0digestion damage the walls of the stomach or duodenum. The most common cause of peptic ulcers is infection with a bacterium called <a id=\"anch_40\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/helicobacterpyloriinfections.html\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"noreveal\">Helicobacter pylori<\/a>.
