Source readings: Cædmon’s “Hymn”; “The Dream of the Rood”
Discussion Prompt
Answer all parts of all questions.
- In the selection from Bede, Bede discusses the circumstances of the development of Caedmon’s “Hymn.” What is your interpretation of the fact that Caedmon, who was not a learned man, was suddenly able to write such inspired poetry? Is it significant that the hymn came to Caedmon in a dream? Explain.
- In “The Dream of the Rood” there is more than one first person speaker: the narrator and the Rood (also known as the “tree,” referring to an actual tree or its subsequent form as Jesus’s cross). Demonstrate an understanding of the poem’s structure by identifying who is speaking and where. (You can use brief quotations and/or line numbers to identify this in your answer.) What are the tree’s (rood’s) feelings about being used for the purpose of Jesus’s cross? What are the narrator’s feelings about dreaming about the Rood?
