The Waymaker Study Plan

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the components of the Waymaker Study Plan
  • Explain how to navigate through the Waymaker Study Plan

The Study Plan Setup

While working through this course, you’ll want to be familiar with each of the components of the Study Plan. Every Study Plan contains the following sections: Get Started, Dive-In, and Finish Strong. It works best to walk through the Study Plan in order, starting at the top, and working your way down the page from left to right. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect in each of these sections of the Study Plan.

Get Started

As you saw, the first tile of the Study Plan is the Show What You Know pretest. Remember, this is just a preview of the content that’s coming, and it’s never counted as a grade. Next comes the Why It Matters page, which introduces the content in the module.

Dive In

After the “Getting Started” section, you’ll click on the first “Dive-in” tile. That will take you to an overview page that lists each of the content pages contained within the tile. Click on the first link to go inside of the course content (or in other words, the textbook). Here you’ll find readings, videos, practice questions, and special features. Scroll down each page to read it entirely.

Learning Outcomes

The content pages begin with an introduction page and a broad learning outcome, then more detailed pages of readings that have learning outcomes or objectives listed at the top of the pages. These learning outcomes identify the most important things you need to learn from each page. It’s worth taking the time to read each outcome and ask yourself, “Am I getting this?” If you can successfully do the task outlined in the learning outcome, you will be well prepared for the assessments and the module quiz.

Embedded Practice

Take the time to read the material presented in the text. Pause when you encounter “Try It” practice questions (like the one below). These questions are never graded, and they are a great way to test your understanding of the content. These will prepare you for Self Checks and module quizzes. Pay attention to the feedback on the questions.

Many pages also contain videos. When they are embedded, we recommend watching the entire video. When they are linked out, they are optional resources you may choose to visit if you want to learn more. This video below highlights all of the sections of the Study Plan.

Watch It

Watch this video to see a walkthrough of the Study Plan inside of an Introductory Sociology course. Look for each of the main sections of the Study Plan you’ve learned about on this page. You can click on “YouTube” in the lower-right corner to see it full-screen in another tab.

Navigating Through the Study Plan

At the bottom of each learning page are three navigation buttons: Previous, Study Plan, and Next. “Previous” returns to the previous page, “Study Plan” returns to the Study Plan view, and “Next” advances to the next page. You can also navigate to the previous and next pages by using the text icons at the top of each page.

The last page in each tile is a Self Check. This is another practice assessment. Your teacher may assign it as a completion grade, but you will not be penalized for missing any answers. The slides below highlight the navigation buttons within each tile and show the Self Check at the end.

Finish Strong

After working through all of the tiles, you are reading for the “Finish Strong” section. This includes a concluding page that summarizes key concepts from the module, and then a final page that gives you instructions for completing the module quiz.
