Elementary Algebra
 by Lumen Learning is a derivative work based on Developmental Math: An Open Program, provided by Monterey Institute of Technology and Education. This course includes an interactive text with embedded video examples created by James Sousa (mathispower4u.com). The course covers one semester of Beginning or Elementary algebra for college students in developmental math. The course is also fully integrated in our online homework platform, Lumen OHM.Text

Topic Overview

This course is delivered in 8 modules and a review including the following topics:

Module 0: Review

  • A review of the order of operations with real numbers, and arithmetic with fractions

Module 1: Solving Equations and Inequalities

  • Solving linear equations, classifying solutions to linear equations
  • Solving linear inequalities

Module 2: Graphing

  • Writing equations of lines given points, words, and graphs
  • Graphing linear equations and inequalities

Module 3: Systems of Equations and Inequalities

  • Graphing and solving systems of equations in two variables, classifying solutions to linear systems
  • Applications of systems of equations including mixture problems, and cost/ revenue problems

Module 4: Exponents

  • Rules for exponents and scientific notation

Module 5: Polynomials

  • Operations on and applications of polynomials

Module 6: Factoring

  • Factoring polynomials including trinomials and special products
  • Solve polynomial and quadratic equations including projectile motion and the pythagorean theorem

Module 7: Rational Expressions and Equations

  • Rational expressions and solving rational equations

Module 8: Introduction to Roots and Rational Exponents

  • Roots and radical expressions
  • Solving radical equations

Length: One semester

Algorithmic practice and assessment problem sets delivered by Lumen OHM include a formative assessment covering the whole module, a set of practice problems for each page of text and a summative assessment covering the whole module.

Online Assessment Features

Many questions in the Lumen OHM libraries are randomized, algorithmic questions. Students get immediate feedback after they submit an answer. Question types include:

  • Graphing
  • Reading information from a graph
  • Multiple choice
  • Free-writing (instructor graded)
