Scientific Notation – The Basics

Scientific notation is useful for any instances when you are dealing with numbers that are either very large or very small. In Chemistry, we often deal with numbers of this type, so it is helpful to have a simple, condensed way to represent them.

The representation is in the form:

A.ZZ x 10n

1≤ A < 10

Where n is an integer and every digit included in A is significant.

For a number such as 0.0000435, the correct scientific notation representation would be: 4.35 x 10-5

For a number such as 43500000, the correct scientific notation representation would be: 4.35 x 107
