The World Health Organization defines an outbreak as “the occurrence of cases of disease in excess of what would normally be expected in a defined community, geographical area or season” (WHO, 2016). To help educate the general population on this critical topic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed an interactive game that allows the user to decipher clues about a specific outbreak in order to stop its spread. This chapter goes into detail about which organizations are specifically responsible for handling outbreaks if they are to occur, as well as explains the proper procedures needed to be the best “disease detective.” This chapter will also correlate the interactive game to real-life practices in epidemiology.
