Cognitive Ability Tests"},"content":{"raw":"<h3><strong>Definition:<\/strong>\u00a0 <a id=\"Cogabil\"><\/a>Tests designed to measure <a id=\"Intell\"><\/a><em>intelligence<\/em> or other constructs related to <a id=\"Cogbability\"><\/a><em>cognitive ability<\/em>.<\/h3>\r\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Description.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 The ambiguous definition above reflects the longstanding uncertainty about what traditional intelligence tests measure. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertjsternberg.com\/successful-intelligence\">Sternberg (1984)<\/a> summarized the beliefs of many when he wrote that although many psychologists \"act as though 'intelligence is what intelligence tests measure'...few of us believe it\" (p. 307).\u00a0 Measures of cognitive abilities can predict educational and occupational performance and are associated with health and mating choices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/mp2014105?source=post_page---------------------------\">(Plomin &amp; Deary, 2015<\/a>). What these tests measure, however, remains in some doubt. On the basis of strong positive correlations among intelligence measures, Spearman introduced the idea of <em>g<\/em>, or a general factor of intelligence.
