Chances are, you had to:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><em><strong>Investigate<\/strong><\/em> to find out the song's title:\r\n(\"E.T.,\" \"The Lazy Song,\" \"Born This Way,\" \"Latinoam\u00e9rica\")<\/li>\r\n\t<li><em><strong>Investigate<\/strong><\/em> to find out who performed the song:\r\n(Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Kanye West, Calle 13)<\/li>\r\n\t<li><em><strong>Investigate<\/strong><\/em> to find out what CD that song was on:\r\n(<em>Teenage Dream<\/em>, <em>Doo-Wops &amp; Hooligans<\/em>, <em>Born This Way<\/em>, <em>Entren Los Que Quieran<\/em>)<\/li>\r\n\t<li><em><strong>Investigate<\/strong><\/em> to find out where\u2014or if\u2014you could buy that CD or mp3s.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nYou can't\u2014and won't\u2014get what you want without <em>investigating<\/em>.\r\n\r\nAnd it's really no different with researching. Don't waste your time diving into research until you know what the assignment requires.\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Is it a report?<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Is it an analytical paper?<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Is it an argumentative essay?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nYou need to know before you begin! The type of assignment will determine what kind of research you need to do, and how you need to organize and present that research in your paper. Even an \"A\" quality report can earn an \"F\" if the assignment is to write an argumentative essay.\r\n\r\nConsider the differences in these assignments:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Basic Report:\u00a0<\/strong>Pretty easy. You'll simply have to find information on your topic and present it as it appears.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Analytical Paper:\u00a0<\/strong>A little harder. Your answer may be \"I have no idea what I want.\" But don't let this bog you down. Topics are all around you every day.\r\n<div class=\"tip_bottom_left_wide\">\r\n\r\nChoose your topic as carefully as you would choose someone you wanted to date. Would you enjoy dating someone who was dull, annoying, or had totally different interests from you? Then why spend a few days, weeks, or even months with a topic you don't like only to be graded on it?\r\n\r\nTopics don't have feelings, but you do, so try to <em>choose something that interests you<\/em>. Even if your professor assigns you a topic, you can choose an aspect of that topic that interests you.\r\n<div class=\"tip_top_left\">\r\n<h2>Investigating <strong>Step 3<\/strong>:\u00a0Writing a working thesis statement<\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"tip_top_right\"><em>All the time and effort you put into researching is wasted unless you can focus on what you need.<\/em> How do you do that? By establishing a working thesis statement. Plan to revise it several times as you learn more about your topic.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"tip_bottom_left_wide\">\r\n\r\nA working thesis statement helps you concentrate on what you want and ignore information that is irrelevant. Consider the following working thesis statement.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Profilers have played a necessary role in catching serial killers.<\/div>\r\nUsing this statement for a paper allows you to skip over the sources:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>that do not deal with profiling.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>that do not deal with the apprehension of serial killers.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>that deal only with the injustices of \"racial profiling.\"<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<em>A good working thesis statement saves you time and keeps you focused.<\/em>\r\n<div class=\"tip_top_left\">\r\n<h3>Avoiding Poor Thesis Statements<\/h3>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p class=\"tip_top_right\">It is important not only to have a thesis statement, but to have a good one.\u00a0<em>An inadequate thesis statement is almost as bad as not having one at all.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"tip_top_right\">Here\u00a0are examples of thesis statements you'll want to avoid\u2014because they'll lead to weak papers with poor grades:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"tip_bottom_left_wide\">\r\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\r\n<h3>Why Is This Unsuitable?<\/h3>\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Man has had major impact on the environment.<\/div>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Way too vague and broad.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>What constitutes \"major impact\"?<\/li>\r\n\t<li>What aspects of the environment are we talking about?<\/li>\r\n\t<li>What century are we talking about?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\r\n<h3>Why Is This Unsuitable?<\/h3>\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Marijuana use in Mishawaka, Indiana, has been a problem for law enforcement since the 1970s.<\/div>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Even if it is true, it is too local and narrow to be supported with national or scholarly research.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Sources would probably be limited to local newspaper articles and personal interviews.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Can you make those sources \"stretch\" across a 10 page research paper? Not likely.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\r\n<h3>Why Is This Unsuitable?<\/h3>\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Miley Cyrus is a horrible singer.<\/div>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Because the statement is largely an unfocused opinion.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>What exactly is \"horrible\"?<\/li>\r\n\t<li>How does Miley Cyrus fall into that category?<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Do you think there are many books or research articles that could support this topic? Or you may find too many articles to wade through if your research question is broad. Be flexible with your topic, thesis statement, and research question. Your answer may be &#8220;I have no idea what I want.&#8221; But don&#8217;t let this bog you down. Topics are all around you every day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tip_bottom_left_wide\">\n<p>Choose your topic as carefully as you would choose someone you wanted to date. Would you enjoy dating someone who was dull, annoying, or had totally different interests from you? Then why spend a few days, weeks, or even months with a topic you don&#8217;t like only to be graded on it?<\/p>\n<p>Topics don&#8217;t have feelings, but you do, so try to <em>choose something that interests you<\/em>. Even if your professor assigns you a topic, you can choose an aspect of that topic that interests you.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tip_top_left\">\n<h2>Investigating <strong>Step 3<\/strong>:\u00a0Writing a working thesis statement<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tip_top_right\"><em>All the time and effort you put into researching is wasted unless you can focus on what you need.<\/em> How do you do that? By establishing a working thesis statement. Plan to revise it several times as you learn more about your topic.<\/div>\n<div class=\"tip_bottom_left_wide\">\n<p>A working thesis statement helps you concentrate on what you want and ignore information that is irrelevant. Consider the following working thesis statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Profilers have played a necessary role in catching serial killers.<\/div>\n<p>Using this statement for a paper allows you to skip over the sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>that do not deal with profiling.<\/li>\n<li>that do not deal with the apprehension of serial killers.<\/li>\n<li>that deal only with the injustices of &#8220;racial profiling.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>A good working thesis statement saves you time and keeps you focused.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"tip_top_left\">\n<h3>Avoiding Poor Thesis Statements<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"tip_top_right\">It is important not only to have a thesis statement, but to have a good one.\u00a0<em>An inadequate thesis statement is almost as bad as not having one at all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"tip_top_right\">Here\u00a0are examples of thesis statements you&#8217;ll want to avoid\u2014because they&#8217;ll lead to weak papers with poor grades:<\/p>\n<div class=\"tip_bottom_left_wide\">\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\n<h3>Why Is This Unsuitable?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Man has had major impact on the environment.<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Way too vague and broad.<\/li>\n<li>What constitutes &#8220;major impact&#8221;?<\/li>\n<li>What aspects of the environment are we talking about?<\/li>\n<li>What century are we talking about?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\n<h3>Why Is This Unsuitable?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Marijuana use in Mishawaka, Indiana, has been a problem for law enforcement since the 1970s.<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Even if it is true, it is too local and narrow to be supported with national or scholarly research.<\/li>\n<li>Sources would probably be limited to local newspaper articles and personal interviews.<\/li>\n<li>Can you make those sources &#8220;stretch&#8221; across a 10 page research paper? Not likely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\n<h3>Why Is This Unsuitable?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">Miley Cyrus is a horrible singer.<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Because the statement is largely an unfocused opinion.<\/li>\n<li>What exactly is &#8220;horrible&#8221;?<\/li>\n<li>How does Miley Cyrus fall into that category?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think there are many books or research articles that could support this topic?
