  • 1-side armed flask
  • Tubing
  • 1-100ml plastic graduated cylinder
  • 1 rubber stopper
  • Weigh boats
  • 1 container of ~4 M HCl w/ pipet
  • 1-10ml graduated cylinder
  • A Container of Ca, Al or Mg
  • 1-50mL beaker
  • Disposable spatulas
  • Tongs
  • Beaker labelled “Waste”

Safety and Notes

*It is important to follow the safety guidelines below while performing this lab.

  • The 4 M HCl solution is corrosive. If you get any on you, rinse your skin with copious amounts of water and inform your instructor.
  • Some of the metals can react with water. Therefore do not touch the metals, instead add them to the acid solution directly using a scoopula or weight boat.
  • Hydrogen gas forms explosive and flammable mixtures with air. Ensure that there are no flames present and don’t switch on any electrical apparatus while the experiment is being conducted.
  • Label ALL glassware with your name, date, chemicals and concentration according to TCC policy.
  • Waste to be disposed of in container labelled “Waste” and then transported all at the end of the lab and placed in the container labelled “111 Waste” in the hood.
  • Please wash all glassware and return all supplies to their proper location.

Lab Setup

Photo of the lab setup
  • The graduated cylinder used is a 100 mL plastic cylinder.
  • The graduated cylinder should be completely filled with water. To do this, fill the upright cylinder with water, cover it tightly with your hand and upend. Place the cylinder still sealed by your hand, upside down in the tub of water. When you remove your hand, the cylinder should remain filled with water.
  • The cylinder must be securely clamped to the ring stand.
  • The stopper on the flask must fit securely into the neck of top.
  • The tubing used to connect the flask to the cylinder should be as short as possible.
  • The top of the outlet tube from the flask is at the same level as the top of the inverted measuring cylinder to prevent siphoning of the water into the flask after the reaction is completed.
  • Ensure that the end of the tubing is secured in the bottom of the graduated cylinder by lowering the clamped cylinder to the bottom of the tub and gently trapping the tubing in place. Note: Be sure not to flatten or kink the tubing so that no H2 gas can travel through it!
  • Set up the apparatus as shown.
