Federalist Papers Explorations
- In what ways are Federalist 1, Federalist 10, and Federalist 51 indebted to the political philosophy of the Enlightenment? Be sure to mention specific examples from the text of the paper(s) and from Locke and Rousseau’s work.
- Note Hamilton’s liberal use of the first person in Federalist 1. What is the rhetorical effect of this personal touch? Remember that he wrote as the anonymous “Publius.” Are you inclined to trust him? Why/why not?
- Federalist 51 is an argument for the separation of powers drawn up in the Constitution. However, Madison acknowledged that “in republican government, the legislative authority necessarily predominates” and went on to assert that “the remedy for this inconveniency is, to divide the legislature into different branches” which operate according to different rules vis-à-vis election and action. Do you believe Congress is the most powerful branch of the government in contemporary times? Why/why not? If so, should its power be checked? If not, should its power be magnified?
- You are well-educated New Yorkers, like Hamilton’s and Jefferson’s audience. Reflect back on the original Constitution. Would their arguments in its defense induce you to vote to ratify it? Why/why not?
