The book known as Genesis (Bereshit in Hebrew) functions as the first book of both the Jewish and Christian Bibles. Originally written in Hebrew, the date of its composition has long been the subject of scholarly debate. Most scholars now believe that Genesis was written sometime in the 6th or 5th centuries, B.C.E.
As you read the text, pay especially close attention to the third chapter, which tells the story of humanity’s disobedience. We will be returning to this theme when we read Paradise Lost later in the semester.
