Argument Essay","rendered":"Definitional Argument Essay"},"content":{"raw":"For a definitional essay, you need to write an argument that a borderline or contested case fits (or does not fit) within a particular category by classifying that particular case and defining the category.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><strong>Definitional arguments require a definition of key terms:<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<strong>Example:<\/strong> Joe is too bossy.\r\n\r\nDefine \u201cbossy\u201d and provide examples of his bossy attitude (poor listening skills, shouting at people, making decisions without asking committee\u2014these are what define \u201cbossy\u201d in your argument.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>Example<\/strong>: Low-carb diets are dangerous.\r\n\r\nDefine what constitutes \u201clow-carb\u201d and define what you mean by \u201cdangerous.\u201d Cite studies showing harmful effects, how substances affect the body, etc.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><strong>Criteria-Match Structure:<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nThe <strong>criteria <\/strong>section of your argument explains and illustrates your criteria.\r\n\r\nThe <strong>match<\/strong> section of your argument persuades the reader that your example meets those criteria.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>Example:<\/strong> Although the Hercules Shoe Company is nonpolluting and provides a socially useful product, <strong>[CLAIM]<\/strong> it is not a socially responsible company <strong>[BECAUSE CLAUSE]<\/strong> because it treats its workers unjustly.\r\n\r\n<strong>Criteria Part:<\/strong> What points must be met for a company to be deemed \u201csocially responsible\u201d?\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>(1) Research how others have defined your term (dictionaries, judicial opinions, expert testimony, etc.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>(2) Use your own critical thinking to make your own extended definition.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Match Part<\/strong>: In
