Usually called a \u201cclaim\u201d or a \u201cthesis,\u201d this point of view is concerned with an issue that doesn\u2019t have a clear right or wrong answer. Argument might tackle issues like abortion, capital punishment, stem cell research, or gun control. However, what distinguishes an argument from \u201creport\u201d writing is that\u00a0the argument must take a stance; if you\u2019re merely summarizing \u201cboth sides\u201d of an issue or pointing out the \u201cpros and cons,\u201d you\u2019re not really writing an argument.\r\n\r\nAcademic arguments usually \u201carticulate an opinion.\u201d This opinion is always carefully\u00a0defended with good reasoning and supported by plenty of research.\u00a0Part of learning to write effective arguments is finding reliable sources (or other documents) that lend credibility to your position.
