Sometimes writers use modifiers incorrectly, leading to strange and unintentionally humorous sentences. The two common types of modifier errors are called misplaced modifiers and dangling modifiers. If either of these errors occurs, readers can no longer read smoothly. Instead, they become stumped trying to figure out <em class=\"im_emphasis\">what<\/em> the writer meant to say. A writer\u2019s goal must always be to communicate clearly and to avoid distracting the reader with strange sentences or awkward sentence constructions. Of course, the writer is referring to the helmet, not to the person\u2019s head. (<em class=\"im_emphasis\">Painting<\/em> is the <em class=\"im_emphasis\">-ing<\/em> modifier.)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Underline the first noun that follows it:\r\n\r\n<em class=\"im_emphasis\">Painting for three hours at night,<\/em> the <span class=\"im_token\">kitchen<\/span> was finally finished by Maggie.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Make sure the modifier and noun go together logically. (<em class=\"im_emphasis\">Painting<\/em> is the <em class=\"im_emphasis\">-ing<\/em> modifier.)<\/li>\n<li>Underline the first noun that follows it:\n<p><em class=\"im_emphasis\">Painting for three hours at night,<\/em> the <span class=\"im_token\">kitchen<\/span> was finally finished by Maggie.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the modifier and noun go together logically.
