The key to correct usage here is to determine whether the term is being used as a noun or verb, and to discern the intended meaning.\r\n\r\n\u201cAffect\u201d is usually used as a verb. (I think of the \u201ca\u201d in \u201caffect\u201d standing for \u201cactive verb.\u201d) To \u201caffect\u201d is to \u201cinfluence\u201d:\r\n
The moon affects the tides.<\/blockquote>\r\n\u201cEffect\u201d is usually used as a noun, and it means \u201coutcome or result\u201d:\r\n
Inflation is one of the effects of war.\r\n\r\nBrackish water has negative effects on certain vegetation.<\/blockquote>\r\nFinally\u2014to the horror of many\u2014\u201ceffect\u201d can also be used as a verb to mean \u201cto bring about,\u201d as in the phrase \u201cto effect a change,\u201d while \u201caffect\u201d can be used as a noun (usually in psychology) to mean \u201cconscious subjective emotion.\u201d Such usages, though infrequent, highlight why you must be particularly careful to choose the correct term for the circumstances, keeping in mind both the intended meaning and the intended part of speech.\r\n
