\r\n\r\nLiterally, an \u201caspect\u201d is \u201cthe idea of a thought viewed by the mind\u201d\u2014in other words, a \u201cthing.\u201d Thus, its value is highly limited; yet many writers produce vacant sentences such as \u201cThis paper will deal with many aspects of my topic,\u201d or \u201cThe problem has many aspects, and the first aspect is the most important aspect.\u201d Such sentences simply are not worth the ink (nor the electrons).\r\n\r\nIf the word \u201cthing\u201d is unacceptable (and it usually is), then \u201caspect\u201d should be too. When you are tempted to use this word, consider alternatives that carry more specific meaning, such as \u201cprinciple,\u201d \u201cproperty,\u201d \u201cfactor,\u201d \u201cdilemma,\u201d \u201creason,\u201d \u201cpart.\u201d Use the exact, most direct term that best conveys the sentence meaning.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n
